My brother (Christian) is in his final year of school and it has been some time since we were last able to spend some time on the water together - he has been too busy chasing girls and school work to get out on the water and I have well been to busy with "Life"... So anyways we decided to hit the vaal river for a bit of flyfishing for yellow fish and this is how the story goes.....
The morning started out early as we wanted to miss the traffic as moving from Pretoria through Johannesburg can be a really interesting ride during Peak hours of traffic so we left Pretoria at 05h30 and arrived at our destination at around 07h30. It was still pretty cold and we were eager to wet a line even though it was way to early to get on the water as the yellows only move into the shallows around midday when the Sun is high and the water is warm.
As this is the yellowfish's peak spawning time we were reluctant to fish the gravelbeds and so as not to disturb the breeding or the nests our paln of action was to use long line (Up stream nymphing)fishing using strike indicators to assist us with the detection of the bits in the form of a piece of bouyant foam attached to the line. We normally use "short line" (New zealand or Czech Nymphing technique) but this requires you get very close to the fish and in so doing disturb the nesting beds.
For pretty much the first three hours we blanked but eventually when the sun did come out I managed the first one of a little over a kg. It did not take Chris too long to play catchup and he landed a golden beauty of 1.2 kgs - fishing was not easy but we were slowly able to put fish on the baord and the little brother showed his old and wise brother how it was done and he was clearly the winner for the day.

Anyways nice to be out on the water and to clear the mind especially before leaving for Khazakstan on Monday.........
Great times......
